What is Flatbed Trucking?
Commercial vehicles that have a flat platform rather than an enclosed trailer are called flatbed trucks. The benefit of this type of truck is that it allows trucking companies to transport large or unusually-shaped freight. Flatbed trucking refers to the transportation of oversized cargo. You might be hauling building supplies, like lumber, steel coils, shingles, and pipe. Or you could be hauling military vehicles, machinery, or even mobile homes. Basically, anything that can’t be hauled in an enclosed trailer because of its size or shape.
The flatbed trailer consists of a wooden platform supported by a strong aluminum frame. While the decks are flat, some trailers carry drop decks, as well. Measuring anywhere from 48 feet to 53 feet long and spanning 8 feet, 6 inches wide, flatbed trailers have a deck height of 60 inches, and a weight capacity of up to 48,000 pounds.
Flatbed truck driving jobs are a little different from other lines of trucking. They’re a little more demanding and can be more hazardous. Drivers of flatbed trucks generally get a higher rate of pay than other types of truckers because of the skills they need to develop to keep their loads properly secure.
